Every formation still fields 22 starters
The number refers to 11 offensive and 11 defensive starters. “3–4” and “4–3” describe defensive fronts; changing your offense from fullback to slot changes one separate spot.
| Group | 3–4 defense | 4–3 defense |
|---|---|---|
| Front line | 2 DE + 1 NT = 3 | 2 DE + 2 DT = 4 |
| Linebackers | 2 OLB + 2 ILB = 4 | 2 OLB + 1 MLB = 3 |
| Secondary | 2 CB + 2 S = 4 | 2 CB + 2 S = 4 |
| Total | 11 defensive starters | 11 defensive starters |
Fullback or slot: one different job
Both offenses use QB, HB, two WR, TE and five offensive linemen. The eleventh spot is either FB or SLOT. Fullback values Attack, Defense and Weight. Slot values Speed, with Attack and Special Defense supporting it.
If your available pool has heavy blockers, the fullback slot gives one an additional landing spot. If you expect more quick receivers, the slot offense gives another speed-based role. These are draft-planning interpretations of the chart, not proof that either formation has a universal scoring advantage.
A changed formation changes the pick
Imagine you have a heavy candidate and only the interior defensive spot remains. In 3–4 that is NT, where Weight is the sole key attribute. In 4–3 it is DT, where Attack is also a key. Compare both Weight and Attack before treating those roles as interchangeable.
